Bleeding during or after sex

This question has been send in by one of my blog readers, Amanda:
How is it possible that I sometime bleed during or after intercourse?
There are several causes for bleeding during or after sexual intercourse. For the first time you're having sex, it's certainly not abnormal. Definitely go to your doctor if you continue to suffer from blood loss though, it may be something that is wrong and you should have it checked if the bleeding continues after two or three times after your first intercourse.

Vaginal bleeding after intercourse can have several causes, including (but not limited to):

  • Use of hormonal contraception
  • Injury in conjunction with an abnormal blood clotting
  • Rough intercourse while your vagina isn;t wet and relaxed enough
  • Inflammation as a result of an STI or STD (in particular, Chlamydia)
  • Polyp of the cervix
  • Cervical cancer
  • Lesions in the cervix
  • Forceful entry / rape
  • Intercourse below the age of 12

The first time of sexual intercourse is often associated with vaginal bleedingduring and/or afterwards the sex. This usually happens and is very normal. It may be because the intercourse went stiff making the vagina irritated to the "sudden" new experience of a penis entering. It may also be that a piece of the hymen (hymen) has started to bleed.

The blood loss may be small (a few drops) to be massive. Sometimes there is pain or burning feeling involved as well. Do you frequently suffer from bleeding during sex, then go for a consultation with your doctor.
